The Future of Yellow is Bright!

Updated: Feb 4, 2021

Yellow!

Scientists say that yellow is the most noticeable colour to the human eye. The first historic reference to the use of the colour 'Yellow' dates back 17,000 years to the prehistoric cave paintings. A colour with so much history went into oblivion for many centuries and actually came back in the limelight only after the 1880s with due gratitude to Vincent Van Gogh. He was the master, one of the most proclaimed artists of his time. He, however, had a troubled past and could not enjoy his successes as he was only recognised for his genius after his death. He used yellow, most of all colours, in his paintings. This can most famously be seen in his sunflower paintings and The Yellow House (1888). In Irises (1890), he contrasts the blue colour of the flowers with a bright yellow background and similarly in The Starry Night (1889), he uses yellow to emphasise the stars and the moon.

After Van Gogh, another Dutch artist, Piet Mondrian, became world-famous for his composition paintings. In 1936, he painted "Composition with Yellow" where he used 'yellow' alongside black and white in geometric grids. Piet Mondrian was also known to inspire YSL's famous Mondrian dress from the 1960s. Then, as the popularity grew of this happy and bright colour, we saw musicians like the Beatles singing 'The Yellow submarine' and making the line "we all live in a Yellow Submarine" an anthem of sorts. Also, Andy Warhol designed the famous Yellow Banana as a record sleeve for The Velvet Underground & Nico's debut album. Since then, many designers and artists have basked in the glory of using yellow to express their designs and creations.
